A call logged from an extension that isn't in the directory, to an External Relations desk, three minutes before Watanabe's last recorded access.

EXT 1401 does not appear in any Kokushi telephone directory I have seen. ER-03 was the desk of T. Marlow, External Relations.
What was sent to me
A transcript, typed, with a handwritten note in the margin: the recording is retained under ER-4417-D. I have never heard the recording. Below is the part I can publish.
MARLOW: External Relations. Marlow speaking.
CALLER: Terry. It’s Watanabe. Forty-four seventeen.
MARLOW: Mr. Watanabe. It’s after two. You should have gone home hours ago.
CALLER: I tried. The gate wouldn’t read my badge. It said I’d already left.
CALLER: I’m on fourteen. I saw the model. My house is lit. Who is in my house?
MARLOW: Your household has been reassigned. Everything is within tolerance.
CALLER: I resigned. You have my letter.
MARLOW: People don’t leave Kokushi, Mr. Watanabe. They’re reassigned.

SECOND VOICE: You arrived exactly as expected, Mr. Watanabe.
The second voice
The transcript labels the last speaker RESEARCHER. Whoever typed it crossed that out and wrote nothing in its place.
Two readers who say they have heard the recording, separately and years apart, told me the same thing: the second voice is older, but it is Watanabe’s.
I don’t know what to do with that. Neither, I think, did the person who crossed out the label.
